Guests are met on arrival at O R Tambo International in Johannesburg by a tourAfrika representative and assisted with checking in to their flight to Livingstone, were their 10 Day In-Depth Zambia safari truly commences. Visitors will be met on arrival at Livingstone Airport and visit the Livingstone Museum en route to the hotel. The museum still houses the largest collection of Sir David Livingstone’s letters and journals, and bears testament to the legacy of this illustrious man, who spent more than half his life in Africa. He was dedicated to the exploration of the African continent and the predicament of its people who were, at the time, still being brutally exploited by the slave traders. A quick look of the roaring Victoria Falls is followed by check-in at the hotel, where the late afternoon is spent relaxing.

Wake to the roar of Lions- look out to see the beautiful mist of the falls – truly the smoke of thunder. The morning is spent visiting Zambia portion of the Victoria falls known as the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park. The name Mosi-oa-Tunya name translates to ‘the smoke that thunders’, which is the name locals have given the Victoria Falls. The nature reserve affords unbelievable views, and in the dry season, you may walk across to Livingstone Island for an eye shot of the amazing gorge below. There is also a curio market at the falls and visitors may spend some time here before returning to the lodge. In the afternoon the late afternoon, we embark a sunset cruise on the mighty Zambezi River. Enjoy traditional cocktails and snacks whilst witnessing probably the best sunsets in the world – an evening that will remain painted with you for a lifetime.

The morning is dedicated to an elephant-back safari in a wilderness area not far from Victoria Falls. Seated comfortably on the back of natures true “king of the beasts”, experience an age-old tradition whilst silently exploring the majestic grasslands of Victoria Falls National Park and marvel at the spectacular scenery of Masuie river plunging 120 m into the Zambezi river below. Your safari concludes with a brief training session and interaction with the elephants, followed by a late breakfast or early lunch.
Visitors then spend some time for relaxation and recharging after which they visit a local village and craft market. This visit will bring to light the customs and culture of the Leya people, who have occupied the area since the eleventh century. The village was visited on several occasions by Dr. David Livingstone. After this encounter, visitors are returned to their lodge.

After breakfast, visitors are returned to Livingstone Airport for a flight of just over an hour to Lusaka. From Lusaka Airport, guests are chartered to the Chiawa Game Management Area, from where guests will be transferred to the Royal Zambezi Lodge. Located on the opposite bank to Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools, the Royal Zambezi Lodge is situated on the majestic Zambezi River. This intimate lodge makes the most of the environment in which it is situated, letting nature provide guests with a magnificent setting for their African holiday. The lodge is positioned to allow visitors to take full advantage of a wide variety of safari activities in the area, which is home to elephant, buffalo, lion and the elusive leopard! The late afternoon is dedicated to your first safari in this isolated African wilderness.

The day commences with an early morning river cruise on the Zambezi. Cruise along this stormy river in the lodge’s outboard power boat, stumbling upon hippos, crocodiles and even elephant. Antelope characteristically approach the water with extreme vigilance to evade the crocs. Chorales of water birds fluster and twig among the reed beds, heightening a truthfully phenomenal morning. Visitors spend the rest of the day relaxing before once again embarking on an afternoon safari. Guests also have and opportunity of staying up for an after-dinner safari – the perfect time to witness big cats out on stalk.
Along with your twice daily game drives, the Royal Zambezi Lodge offers a wealth of additional activities. Swap a game drive with a river cruise or bush walk, take on the Zambezi’s famed tiger fish or glide tranquilly along on a guided canoe safari. Undertake a trip further afield and opt for a cultural village tour of the nearby Goba community. Each encounter in this delightfully wild, far-flung corner of the world will prove memorable.

After breakfast, visitors are returned to Lusaka. From Lusaka, guests board a domestic flight to Mfuwe, where they are picked up and transferred to the renowned South Luangwa National Park. Luangwa River Camp lies on the banks of the Luangwa River, which forms the border of the world renowned South Luangwa National Park in Zambia, and also marks the end of the Great Rift Valley. It is perhaps one of the few last unspoilt wilderness areas and one of the finest wildlife sanctuary in Africa and covers an area of over 9,000 square km. Tonight is devoted to another memorable safari in this exceptional part of the Zambia wilderness.

With ox bow lagoons, Miombo woodland and plains of the Luangwa Valley host vast concentrations of game including elephant, buffalo, leopard, lion, giraffe, hippo, wild dog and the puku, which is endemic to the region. The area also boasts over 400 species of birds. Your safari activities over the next two days include daily game drives and encountering game on foot. Supplementary, activities cover the Kawaza Village for a cultural experience or exploring the market near Mfuwe – ideal for purchasing a souvenir. Relax and recharge in the pool between your adventures and witness animals arriving at the riverbank to quench their thirst or indulge in a dip.

After breakfast visitors by a transferred to Mfuwe and a flight to Lusaka. In Lusaka, guests board a flight back to Johannesburg, and thus concluding a unforgettable 10-day in-depth exploration of Zambia’s leading wilderness areas.
